What is a hand sanitiser?
Hand sanitiser is an antiseptic liquid formulation that quickly kills and neutralizes the growth of germs on hands, with the aim of avoiding transmission of germs. Unlike hand cleansers, which clean physically dirty hands and require water to lather and then rinse off, hand sanitisers do not require water and can simply be left on the hands.
Why would I need a hand sanitiser?
The Australian Academy of Science recommends the number one way to prevent the spread of germs is by hand washing. Unfortunately, that is not always convenient. If I can still smell the alcohol-gel hand sanitiser, is it working?
Once an alcohol-based sanitiser has evaporated, its killing power is gone, and this usually happens very soon after application. Some brands of alcohol-based sanitisers include strong fragrances to try to give a sense of security to the consumer...("as long as I can smell it, it must still be working")... however, as soon as the alcohol evaporates, it is no longer effective at killing germs.
How effective is Hand Sanitiser against harmful microorganisms?
The hand sanitiser is effective against a wide range of common germs, killing up to 99.9999% of disease-causing germs in as little as 15-30 seconds.
How much Hand Sanitiser is needed to clean your hands?
An amount of 1-2 squirts (0.4-0.8 ml) is sufficient to produce the desired effect. You need to cover all surfaces of your hands, the top, bottom, fingers, around fingertips and fingernails. Follow the instructions on the bottle of hand sanitiser.
How long do you rub your hands together when using hand sanitiser?
Rub your hands together for about 15-30 seconds (about the time it takes to sing the ‘Happy Birthday to You’ song) or until hands feel dry.
How long is hand sanitiser effective for?

Yes. Rub your hands together until the hand sanitiser feels dry on your skin. DO NOT wave your hands around to dry them because they will pick up microorganisms that are in the air.

Hand Sanitiser has a shelf life of two years. “Use within 18 months of opening”.
I have eczema, is hand sanitiser bad for my skin?
It is better for people with eczema to wash hands with soap and water, then apply hand cream. Hand sanitisers can be very irritating to eczema skin. If you must use hand sanitiser, apply moisturising cream after your hands are dry. Avoid hand sanitisers with essential oils as they can irritate skin further.
Do natural hand sanitisers work?
Research currently indicates that natural or herbal hand sanitisers are NOT effective at killing germs.
